Housing slip hits Parade of Homes

Allen County’s home construction rate plummeted nearly 53 percent last month from February 2007, according to the Home Builders Association of Fort Wayne.

Builders’ concerns about adding to their unsold inventory led the Home Builders Association to change its plans for the fall Parade of Homes, association president Matt Lancia said.

The association could not get enough commitments for the event, which needs at least six houses in a single subdivision. The association may replace the Parade of Homes with an event highlighting scattered homes instead, he said.

Last year’s Parade of Homes highlighted houses in the $300,000 to $500,000 price range. Some builders were concerned about their existing inventory and didn’t want to add to it with Parade homes, Lancia said.

“Builders are just more conservative and don’t want to take an unnecessary risk,” he said.
