One month doesn’t make a trend, economists like to say. But homebuilding perked up in January when compared with the last few months of 2007, which could signal improvement for the industry.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed, and it’s too soon to tell,” said economist Fred Crowley of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. “But the last several months, it really does look like it’s bottomed out.” In January, 121 single-family home building permits were issued in El Paso County, down 37 percent from the same month a year ago, according to a report Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.
January’s permit total, however, was the highest since August, even though the first month of the year is typically a slower time for construction, Crowley said.
