FORT WORTH—Five years ago, real estate developer and home builder Gary Sheffield began planning a single-family home development off Loop 820 and Ramey Avenue in southeast Fort Worth.
His industry peers told him it was too risky to tackle a project in a part of town that hadn’t seen new development in decades. Moreover, the homes Sheffield wanted to go in there were going to be valued much higher than the older, existing homes around the development, to be called Ramey Place.
But there was a push to bring quality affordable housing to the city’s southeast side, an area long neglected by builders and retailers, and Sheffield said he believed in the cause. Read more
